Our Coverstar IDRIS ELBA has got to be the man of the moment and not just here in the UK but worldwide. He stars in the summer blockbuster PACIFIC RIM and we were lucky enough to accompany him to the premier at the Southbank British Film Institute London. He has quite a few small and big screen projects going on at the moment and you can read more about them inside. His series LUTHER is currently airing on BBC1 and did you know that LUTHER is the third most watched BBC program in the world, preceeded only by TOP GEAR and DOCTOR WHO. Yet that’s not the real coup, IDRIS has an alter-ego ‘DJ 7 WALLACE’ and we were given the privilage of hosting him earlier this Summer for an exclusive set at D101 MAGAZINE clubnight SOUL SESSION. He came, he conquered and he partied hard, great fun. He plays house music, that’s his thing, and if you are in IBIZA this July and August then search out DJ 7 WALLACE as he will be playing a few exclusive sets on the Spanish Island. For now he is the star of the D101 MAGAZINE DJ SPECIAL and we couldn’t be happier.
I’m almost certain you are aware that MR WEST has delivered not only a new born baby this summer but also a number one album entitled Yeezus. However you may not be aware that the LP features the lyric “get this bitch shaking like Parkinson’s”. Steve Ford, Chief Executive at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Kanye West has shown an inexcusable level of stupidity and cruelty towards people living with an incurable condition”. Deep, and what can you say maybe sometimes we should be more thoughtful? Parkinsons is an incurable disease that generally effects over 40s although one in twenty are under 40 when diagnosed. The most famous sufferer is boxer MuhammAd ALI. Talking boxers and on a more positive note, UK boxer DAVID HAYE recently appeared on ITV’s Family Fortunes and proceeded to win £10,000 for the AFRO CARIBBEAN LUKEMIA TRUST [ACLT] a charity that is very close to our heart here at D101 after loosing our good friend and colleague DJ SWING to a rare blood disease.
C4 WAKES UP
Talking TV, CHANNEL FOUR has woken back up. Were they asleep I hear you ask? Well we think they nodded off for a little while but not anymore. They seem to be opening their eyes with some traditionally challenging and entertaining programs including EYE SPY, Stephen Fry and his GADGET SHOW, SMELLS LIKE FRIDAY NIGHT and short drama RUN which is to be aired this July and stars among many others JAMIE WINSTONE. With a new series of TOP BOY still to come and much more; yes we believe Channel 4 has woken up and we are glad to see it.
THE DJ SPECIAL
This is the DJ SPECIAL and inside we feature a selection of DJs that are keeping it moving right now. From our coverstar IDRIS 7 WALLACE ELBA to DEJAVU’s NEV G, plus DJ JABIG from Canada who is responsible for our FREE HOUSE mixtape entitled PHOENIX RISING arranged and produced by SKP, mixed by JABIG and featuring the wonderful words, music and vocals of legend JILL SCOTT.
Can’t really talk DJs, UK and clubs without including the DJ known as EMILY RAWSON. Currently renowned for her part in the SUPA DUPA FLY and ROCK THE BELLES series of events this female DJ is giving EVERYone a run for their money. You can catch Emily this month at London’s JAZZ CAFE and also at the VICTORIA PARK FESTIVAL, HACKNEY.
So much new music this summer, who would have thought that J.COLE would be leading the revolution, taking on KANYE WEST and dominating the BILLBOARD album charts. We have been lucky enough to partyhard with MR COLE, and all I can say is that the old cliche ‘what goes on tour, stays on tour’ really applies in JOE’s case, funtimes. LILLY ALLEN returns and features with one of pop musics most credible artists of the previous decade, PINK. I don’t know if we would have mentioned LILLY here but she’s currently got Twitter beef with MS Azealia BANKS and LILLY is going in. It’s all hype, it’s all promo and it’s all fun for us. Back to her feature on PINK’s track which we think is a good move by our LILLY and together I’m almost sure they are going to bag a number one, somewhere. The track is entitled TRUE LOVE and is great pop. Talking pop, is it just me or is this BRUNO MARS a mini genius? Maybe it’s just me, I bet it ain’t though, come on own up.
In the music section you will find all our latest reviews, charts and mixtapes. TONY YAYO was one of the artists to catch our eye this month but there are many more. For example reggae veteran FRANKIE PAUL has released an album tribute to the late great DENNIS BROWN and as the PR says “One can not understate the importance of the late Dennis Brown to the world of reggae. Dennis has distinguished himself as one of the finest and most talented musicians of our time. The Crown Prince of Reggae as he was commonly called has left us with a vast repertoire of songs which will continue to satisfy the hearts and minds of us all for generations to come.” Despite passing at a mere 42 years of age, Brown’s career as Jamaica’s leader in lovers rock ran for more than 30 years. From “No Man Is An Island” which Brown recorded for Sir Coxsone Dodd aged 12 through to “Love Has Found Its Way ” and much more inbetween.
Our coverstar Idris Elba has not long completed filming his starring role as the South African freedom fighter and ex President. Inside we take a look at the movie and also Nelson’s life and we ask some questions that are very topical right now. We also take this opportunity to send our prayers out to the great man.
So many clubs and events this summer. We were lucky enough to witness disco king NILE RODGERS at GLASTONBURY and I’m not going to lie, the first 15 minutes of his set were like being in a club listening to funky house, they really slammed it LIVE. NILE has been reintroduced to a new generation of fans with his work on DAFT PUNK’s latest LP and their No.1 hit GET LUCKY featuring PHARRELL WILLIAMS, who incidentally is himself experiencing a bit of a revival and his colabo with ROBIN THICKE – BLURRED LINES has been one of the most played tracks of the summer. Back to NILE RODGERS who has been one of the most successful musicians and producers of the past 20 years and he’s just about to release a compilation album that includes some of his greatest hits, from DIANA ROSS to MADONNA. The LP really demonstrates how musical he is. Genius is not an over statement when referring to NILE he really is a musical phenomena. Most people would be glad with one super hit, he’s had countless.
The summer is always a busy time on the club circuit both here and abroad. Ibiza, Napa, Barcelona, Croatia, Germany there are festivals all over the place. Our Borough HACKNEY chips in with the VICTORIA PARK festival and I’m especially looking forward to jamming with Lil KIM again. She keeps it real that one, so I can not tell you what it is going to be like as LIL KIM is one lady that is hard to second guess.
PHOENIX RISING | A dope rhyme to step to!
So it’s been a longtime… and as such we thought it only right to leave you with a dope rhyme so make sure you download our PHOENIX RISING mixtape p.18, it’s the best in deep house beats. That’s it we’re out, we will be back for Notting Hill Carnival, so until then have fun and STAY SAFE!
